New Market warnings to begin for school zone speed safety PROGRAM AS School Begins

NEW MARKET, MD. (August 9, 2022) – Starting September 9, 2022, New Market’s new school zone speed safety cameras will capture images of vehicles that speed through school zones for 30 days. The Town, partnering with the Frederick Police Department, will issue warnings during the 30-day period to the registered owner of any vehicle that is photographed passing through the school zone more than the posted speed limit. The cameras will be operational from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday-Friday. There will be no fines associated with the warnings; however, a speeding violation will carry a fine of $40 after the 30-day warning period ends. Signs are in place to alert drivers that the school zone is an automated enforcement area.

School zone speed safety cameras are installed near the following school/area:

  • 0 Block to 100 Block of Main Street, New Market, MD

“The school zone speed cameras provide a consistent enforcement presence that changes driver behavior and creates a safer environment for our students and pedestrians,” said Thomas Dommel, New Market School Zone Speed Program Manager.

“We are providing drivers with a 30-day warning period to become aware of the program and strongly advise drivers to be alert and to always abide by the posted speed limit,” said Lt. Sean Carr, Commander-Professional Services Division, Frederick Police Department “Speeding is the leading cause for traffic fatalities in the nation. These devices reduce speed and increase safety for children, pedestrians, and cyclists in New Market.”

The Town of New Market and the Frederick Police Department contracts with Verra Mobility to administer its safety program. They determine whether a violation event has occurred and reviews each warning and citation prior to issuance.
